Many people may associate wicker patio sets with quaint American tradition, the kind of American is in the arcades in the old villages of the south. While this may ring true, the history of wicker, starts much further, and millennia before U.S. was even seen by Europeans. From ancient Egypt wicker evolution has been so diverse and global-reaching. See how this material is more modest than the eye.

Wicker is one of the materials oldest used for furniture, but the discovery was made by chance. While archaeologists were excavating the remains of the pharaohs, they met with the discovery Wicker had been woven around 3000 BC. The ancient Egyptians had used the marsh reeds and grasses to weave baskets, boxes, chairs and even pictures of the wig with wicker material.

From its initial popularity, wicker extended the Roman Empire, where the ruling classes looked favorably upon the new simple but attractive style. Eventually, the Romans began to exert their influence on the designs of wicker and create unique variations.

After Rome, wicker spread in most parts of Europe. Once the maritime trade routes had become well established, the willow is then transported the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal, where he was universally praised, despite a decline during the Middle Ages. As European explorers ventured farther east, the discovery of rattan was done as an alternative to traditional rattan cane. In fact, rattan proven much stronger than the cane. In the nineteenth century, wicker sets patio accessories were common in homes of England Victoria. Its simplicity and natural look was thought to be cleaner and therefore more suitable both indoor and outdoor.

While wicker furniture first came to the Americas through the Mayflower, it was not until mid 1800 which became well known. Until then, the rattan was used for storage and placement of the load. A business man by the name of Cyrus Wakefield, also known as the father of American wicker furniture, he found large quantities of rattan in a shipyard in Boston and had an idea to start his own furniture company. And that's just what he did. He rose from his hometown of Wakefield, began importing wicker furniture manufacturing and for retail. Once your idea work in, others followed suit, but Wakefield held his lead in the business.

The industrial revolution of the mid-nineteenth century brought further progress in building wicker patio sets. Until then, everyone has had a hand wicker, woven, which proved a long and arduous process. In the decade Heywood Brothers 1860 (one of Wakefield's competitors) commissioned an inventor to reach a loom wicker. This achievement not only save time but also saves labor and overall production costs. Since the two firms that compete competed for first place, prices fell and people could buy furniture wicker for almost nothing. After a while, Heywood Wakefield and merged, which dominates the wicker industry until the 1920s.

Unfortunately, begin almost at the same time, the popularity of wicker began to decline, as consumers began to opt for simple lines and geometric on the most complex wicker patio sets. Although Heywood and Wakefield attempted to redesign their products to satisfy the public taste was not until the designer Marshal B. Lloyd restored the popularity of wicker, using synthetic materials and simplified designs choose, therefore, reduce costs and give the people what they wanted anyway. Once again, Wakefield engulfed the competition by buying Lloyd, but even the Big Three could not save wicker, during the Great Depression.

Fortunately for lovers of outdoor wicker patio sets, have once again grown in popularity over the past four decades. This increase is consistent with global demand for more variety of outdoor furniture. Who would have thought the wicker, we know and love began his journey of a thousand years ago, only after looking fabulous in our decks.
